Twice the tool life thanks to optimum coolant supply
The turning of micro bores on the sub-spindle of a Swiss-type automatic lathe is often restricted by an inadequate coolant supply. The new Ifanger tool holder MTHA 19070/4SK with lateral coolant inlet proved to be a game changer in the manufacture of dental implants. This success shows how innovative Ifanger solutions can lead to significant improvements in machining.
Problem definition
Reduced tool life: After machining 3,000 titanium dental implants, the surface quality deteriorated significantly. The limiting factor was the external coolant application.
Production organization: The tool replacement and the preventive maintenance are synchronized with the shift change. All tools must therefore ensure a minimum tool life for the production of 2,000 parts, which corresponds to the volume of an 8-hour shift. Although the current tool life of the Swiss-MicroTurn tools is with 3,000 parts already very high for titanium parts, it is not sufficient to cover two shifts. For the customer, an increase in tool life to two shifts for totally 4,000 parts is necessary in order to remain economical.
Residues in the bore: Chips and dust accumulated in the bore of the implant screw, resulting in increased cleaning effort.
Consequences
Cost optimization not possible: The Swiss-MicroTurn tools were changed every 8 hours despite the improvements in tool life.
High cleaning effort: Metal residues in the machining area led to longer cleaning times and higher costs.
Solution
Development of a dedicated tool holder: Ifanger developed the Swiss-MicroTurn MTHA 19070/4SK in close cooperation with 2 different sales partner and their end customers.
Integrated high-pressure cooling: The supply of cooling lubricant at high pressure has improved chip evacuation and significantly reduced the thermal load on the cutting edge.
Optimum compatibility: The new tool holder is compatible with all standard Swiss-type automatic lathes and all the Swiss-MicroTurn cutting tools from Ifanger, offering maximum flexibility in use.
Benefits
Tool change cadence extended by 100%: Instead of replacing the MTEE 42504-R-TiAlN tool after every shift, it can now cut for two shifts without any loss of quality.
The Swiss-MicroTurn MTEE 42504-R-TIALN corner steel tool was developed specifically for machining the internal end cone of a dental implant.
Fewer interruptions to production: Fewer tool changes increase machine availability and significantly reduce production costs.
Lower cleaning costs: The improved chip removal shortens the downstream cleaning process.
Higher margin: The higher productivity and reduced downtimes lead to a considerable reduction in costs.
