Precision sleeves made of grade 5 titanium

The secret behind the perfect machining of grade 5 titanium - process reliability and maximum precision!

Applications of titanium grade 5

Titanium grade 5, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is one of the most commonly used titanium alloys. Due to its high strength, low weight, high temperature and fatigue resistance, and biocompatibility, it is preferred in the medical, watchmaking (e.g. cases and bracelets), aerospace, and oil and gas industries.

Challenges in the production of the sleeve

The sleeve made of titanium grade 5 (material no. 3.7165 ) is manufactured on a Citizen M32 sliding headstock automatic lathe, which is particularly suitable for machining complex and precise parts. Grade 5 titanium requires demanding production at low cutting speeds. The main challenges are to maintain very tight tolerances, in particular a coaxiality of 0.04 mm of the Ø13 H7 in relation to the base A, which is located on the Ø7 H7.

Machining strategy and tool selection

The manufacture of this sleeve requires careful planning and the selection of suitable tools. An important part of the tool range comes from Ifanger AG, whose special tools help us to achieve the exact specifications.

Internal turning Ø7 H7 - Base A
The Swiss-MicroTurn tool type MTKO 66020-R-TIALN is used for the precision machining of the Ø7, which forms the base A of the sleeve and is considered the most precise element of the component. This high-performance tool makes it possible to machine the surface with exceptional precision, as it does not allow any vibrations during the process. This stability is crucial in order to reliably maintain the small coaxiality and H7 tolerance. For finishing, we use a speed of 1800 rpm and a feed rate of 0.02 to 0.05 mm per revolution to ensure optimum surface quality and dimensional accuracy.

Fit Ø 13 H7 -coaxiality 0.04 to base A
The MTEC 66050-R-TIALN tool type is suitable for this precision bore. It is characterized by its high cutting ability and stability.

Precision bore Ø 17, corner radius 0.2
The MTEC 66030-R-TIALN tool type with a corner radius of 0.2 mm is ideal for this precision bore. This tool is characterized by its high cutting ability and stability as well as its small corner radius. In order to avoid vibrations and ensure the required surface quality Ra 0.4, the shortest possible tool length was selected, which has a suitable corner radius.

Threading M19x1 6H
The Swiss-MicroTurn threading tool type MTGE 66020-R-TIALN is used for the M19x1 6H internal thread. This tool is ideal for obtaining high-quality thread surfaces without burr formation and meeting the demanding tolerances. With a speed of 600 revolutions and a G92 tapping cycle that uses the pitch as a feed (F1), this tool produces precise and consistent threads, which is crucial for the quality of demanding components.
